Cities: Skylines is a huge critical success as well, earning overwhelmingly positive reviews and an instantaneously devoted community. Skylines was designed to allow players to create their own content for the game. A week later, they’ve already created thousands of buildings and maps. One player recreated Grand Theft Auto V’s fictional city Los Santos within Skylines and another player named Bryan Shannon is making exceptionally high-quality assets, which makes sense as he used to do this professionally for Maxis.
In its attempt to make console gaming more accessible, Microsoft has announced that it will be developing universal apps which can run across Xbox One and Windows 10, as well as smartphones and other mobile devices using the upcoming OS.
“Our goal with gaming at Microsoft is to allow people to play games wherever they are […] We know for developers that it’s critically important for you to reach those gamers wherever they are,” said Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft’s video games branch at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco yesterday.
In her role as a teacher, Wiseman gave a survey to 1,583 students aged 11 to 18 over the past year that examined participants’ preference in gendered protagonists, whether or not they would self-identify as “gamers,” and their thoughts on gamers of another gender.
Of the study’s respondents, 28% of girls answered “yes” to the question, “Are you more likely to play a game based on the character’s gender?” as opposed to 20% of boys. 39% of male respondents said they prefer to play as male characters, while 60% of the high-school-aged girls preferred to play as female protagonists. Burch explained to the room of developers,
But the Vive? It’s like nothing that’s ever come before.
HTC and Valve pulled this sensory illusion off in two ways. First, there’s positional tracking. The HTC Vive uses two sensors you need to hang on the wall at a 90 degree angle. These track you pretty much wherever you are or whatever you do. Crouch, jump, lean, turn your head, tilt, look up, down, left, right, and the system will be able to keep tabs on exactly where you are based on the position of your head.
Today Epic Games, made it possible for anyone to become a game developer with Unreal Engine 4. The Unreal Engine has been used to develop games on almost every platform there is, including Windows, OS X, Linux, Xbox, Playstation, iOS, and Android. Now you can download and use it for free and get all future updates for free as well. The small catch is that you have to pay a 5% royalty on gross revenue after the first $3,000 per product, per quarter, of whatever you make. Considering how versatile the engine is, though, it’s a small price to pay for complete access to their software with no upfront licensing fees. You can download Unreal Engine 4 at the link below.
Unity started as an attempt to democratize game development; it’s not the most powerful engine on the market, but it’s flexible and offers broad support for desktop computers, mobile platforms, and major consoles. Riccitiello says Unity 5 currently supports 21 platforms, including iOS, Android, Windows, BlackBerry, all major consoles, and the Samsung Gear VR. It’s also added support for the browser-based WebGL platform, which makes games very broadly available. Unity’s tech demos still don’t have the breathtaking graphical fidelity of a top-notch AAA game, because they’re not supposed to. But at GDC, we saw a remastered version of high-gloss iPad game Republique, focused heavily on the lighting — it’s definitely a notable improvement, with far softer and more natural shadows.
According to Autodesk’s press release, key advances in Stingray include:
- Simultaneous Platform Deployment
A live link between Stingray and multiple target devices allows game designers to evaluate their games simultaneously on multiple platforms.
- Integrated Workflow
A more efficient pipeline to export 3D content.
- Modern Data-Driven Architecture and Powerful Rendering Capabilities
A data-driven core architecture makes it easier for a user to change the look of a game without having to rewrite and re-compile the engine.
Beyond that, the teaser video (top of story) is pretty enigmatic, and the Stingray product site doesn’t yet include a feature list, or any information about pricing or release dates.
The news release does mention that developer Fatshark is using the engine on its upcoming PC/PS4/Xbox One title Warhammer: End Times – Vermintide, but since it’s Bitquid’s old parent company, that’s no real surprise.
